Learning a second language in childhood is the best time to develop fluency, pronunciation and natural ease of expression. OCEAA offers a Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program (TWBI) that emphasizes and values multiculturalism in addition to rigorous core academic instruction.
OCEAA’s TWBI program follows the research-based 90:10 Model, one of the most successful approaches to teaching a second language. Achievement data from TWBI programs show that English Learners who maintain their primary language as a foundation for learning English outperform their peers on multiple measures of academic achievement.
The primary goals of the Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program are:
- Bilingualism and biliteracy in Spanish and English
- Academic excellence in Spanish and English
- Multicultural competencies
Starting with the 2012-13 school year OCEAA began transitioning to a fully TWBI curriculum, phasing out the English Only strand year by year until the 2019-20 school year when the transition will be complete. Grades 2-8 eligibility for current TWBI will be by assessment after the parent attends the orientation. The parent or legal guardian of all TWBI candidates must attend a mandatory separate 1-hour orientation in order to enroll at OCEAA.
